President's Message

Whether it’s driving to a project site visit in another city, or heading out on your family’s annual road trip, there’s a good chance you’ll be spending some time in a vehicle this summer. When you’ve gotten bored of your music library (or sick of listening to the kids’ video playing in the backseat), podcasts can be a great way to pass the time and get your creative juices flowing.

I’ve tried out dozens of different podcasts over the past couple of years, and my biggest takeaway is that the challenges and opportunities we experience in our work as interior designers are universal. Issues like maintaining creativity, assembling strong teams, building a profitable business and assessing the overall impact of our work on the world are great topics to be explored through podcasts.

Below, in no particular order, are a few of my favourite design-related serial podcasts:

  • How I Built This from NPR – Host Guy Raz interviews the founders of some of the world’s most successful companies, including creative corporations such as Kate Spade, Wayfair, and WeWork. (Come to think of it, you can’t go wrong with pretty much any NPR podcast, including The Ted Radio Hour)
  • Design the Life You Love – hosted by Ayse Birsel, an industrial designer who has worked with Herman Miller. She interviews leaders from all facets of companies related to design, including IDEO and the Museum of Modern Art.
  • Steelcase 360 – this podcast builds upon Steelcase’s strong legacy of research and innovation, and features themes that align with their 360 print and online publications. Their most recent podcast with Simon Sinek is a great listen.
  • EntreArchitect – hosted by Mark R. LePage, a residential architect in the US. While you need to be selective about which episode you listen to, his focus on how to be successful as a small firm entrepreneurial architect has plenty of best practices that are transferrable to professional interior design firms.
  • Design Matters – For more than 15 years, host Debbie Millman has interviewed creatives across all related fields including artists, filmmakers, musicians, authors, fashion designers and others.

Have a podcast you think your colleagues would enjoy? Got a suggestion for a topic or interview we should tackle on our upcoming new IDA podcast? Hit us up on Social Media to share your thoughts, or email me at president@idalberta.ca.

Wishing you all a fabulous summer, with lots of time to reconnect, recharge and re-inspire.
