Can you believe September is over already? What with the back to school craziness and the unwelcome early return of winter weather, it has been a whirlwind.
Hopefully you were able to join us at Urban Encounters in Edmonton or Calgary this past month. As usual, we had tremendous support from our product representatives, and were able to feature over 100 companies and their innovative products. I had the opportunity to attend this year’s show at the BMO Centre in Calgary, and was inspired to see the variety of exhibitors and to get a chance to network with professional colleagues and students.
Interior Designers of Alberta is grateful to have the participation of some leading industry suppliers, including our key sponsors, Cosentino and OFGO Studios. I’d also like to thank the exhibiting companies who generously donated some incredible door prizes that were drawn for throughout the evening. IDA Members and attendees brought home some truly unique items, including accessories, jewelry, artwork, dinnerware, furniture, gift cards, and wine.
Urban Encounters is an important one-of-a-kind event in Alberta, providing the opportunity for IDA Members to build their networks, find inspiration, and participate in an engaging catered reception. It is also our premiere annual fundraiser, generating revenues that help IDA deliver its member services throughout the year. This year IDA was pleased to provide our members who pre-registered for the show with free entry, complimentary parking, and a drink ticket! If you didn't attend this year - we hope you will mark your calendars to attend in 2020.
I also attended the CEU with code consultant Kim Karn, discussing the revised Barrier Free section of the 2019 National Building Code - Alberta Edition. It was an excellent refresher of these important guidelines which impact our projects every day. We had over 30 people attend in Calgary and 40 in Edmonton. We typically get a lot of interest in our code seminars, so we will be continuing to hold these 2-3 times per year. Watch for information on our next session!
As always, thank you to our members for your engagement and participation, in Urban Encounters and as leaders in our industry and association. Please scroll down to see the complete list of all companies that participated in this year’s event.
Will be announced at the PIDIM 65th Anniversary Gala on October 17, 2019

It is an opportunity to celebrate the amazing work in our city, and to familiarize ourselves with the many talented individuals that design the buildings and spaces we eat, live, work, and play in.

A capture of all the bright eyed designers from our Calgary and Edmonton communities!
The Interior Designers of Canada Design Symposium and Annual PROpel program, was held at the Hyatt Regency in Downtown Vancouver, September 11-13. This year’s conference focused around Exploring Human Connections, and was filled with inspirational, thought-provoking, and engaging dialogue.
Speakers included Chris Downey, who spoke about Architecture for the Blind (a blind Architect himself!) and Janet Echelman, a super talented artist with a mesmerizing portfolio of work. We were very fortunate to have such great representation from our Province, with attendees from our Edmonton and Calgary communities.
This year also marked the first PROpel Emerging Leader’s Program. Differing from previous years, this year’s PROpel program allowed Associate and Registered Members to also apply!
The PROpel program was fully integrated into the Design Symposium, providing full networking opportunity to delegates. We highly recommend that members take advantage of this conference provided by the Interior Designers of Canada.
If you are interested in learning more about PROpel, please reach out to one of this year’s attendees! Next year’s Design Symposium and PROpel conference will be held in Ontario.
Fun Fact: Did you know that the PROpel Program is an all expenses paid Conference? Flight and accommodations are covered by the Interior Designers of Canada.
